In a world that is transfixed with binaries and absolutes, we invite you to explore the in-between and play with (im)permanence by blending writing and clay together.
Join Devina Lookman of Dilly Dally Ceramics and Justine Abigail Yu of Living Hyphen in a guided writing workshop with a material twist. Together we will engage with clay as the tactile medium onto which we will transfer our words during the writing process. We’ll begin with learning the basics of slab rolling, diving into the writing process with guided prompts, and merging the results together through the Sgraffito technique in place of paper. Participants will explore themes of memory, inheritance, and transformation – reflecting on what we hold, what we release, and what we choose to remake.
Led by the themes of impermanence and process, there will be no take-home product and all materials will remain at the studio for reclamation and recycling. No prior experience necessary in writing or ceramics. The focus is process over product: curiosity over perfection. This workshop centres slowness, experimentation, and embodied creativity in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
Please wear comfortable clothing and trim long nails for handling of clay.
