Celebrate heritage, imagination and the power of storytelling through art this spring! This season of free family-friendly programming is inspired by artist Roda Medhat’s immersive sculptural environment. With many references to the intricate patterns of traditional Kurdish textile designs, Roda uses light, sound, and movement to animate memories of home and create an imaginative archive of childhood stories, domestic interiors, and cultural transmission. By using LED lights and vinyl inflatables to translate history into the present, Roda encourages us to embrace softness, spectacle, and fun through projects inspired by family, home, and migration.
This season also looks at the work of Toronto-based artist Phuong Nguyen whose exhibition she died a death by a thousand cuts explores how objects can hold cultural memories, personal histories, and stories of resistance and adaptation. Through painting, weaving, and ceramics, Nguyen reimagines traditional patterns and imagery found in Chinoiserie and Vietnamese archival materials, transforming them into vivid, tactile artworks that complicate perceived boundaries between object, figure, and spirit. Her practice invites families to consider how everyday materials, such as fabric, clay, packing materials, and household items, can become containers for storytelling, remembrance, and creative reinvention.
Our knowledgeable artist-instructors will be present to offer guidance and support to develop new ideas, or you are welcome to explore independently and create in your own unique way.
