We are a vibrant cultural hub committed to bringing contemporary art and craft alive in meaningful ways. We believe that art connects us, inspires innovation, and deepens our understanding of each other and the world around us. In recognizing our responsibility to honour the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this land long before us, we humbly acknowledge that we are on Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We express our heartfelt gratitude to these Nations for graciously allowing us to share their land. This acknowledgment guides our commitment to fostering a space of inclusivity, reflection, and respect.

Our new reimagined website represents our dedication to expanding accessibility and engagement through dynamic digital experiences. Whether it’s virtual tours led by artists and curators, enriched multimedia explorations, or seamless access to exhibitions and collections, our goal is to invite a broader, global community into meaningful encounters with art. At the heart of our redesign is the belief that everyone should feel welcomed, inspired, and connected through creativity and storytelling.

LAND
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Art Gallery of Burlington is located on the ancestral territory of many Indigenous Nations including the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Métis peoples. The territory is mutually covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy, the Ojibway, and other allied Nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We acknowledge that the land upon which we gather, to create and learn, is part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit.

Leila Fatemi

Leila Fatemi is a visual artist currently based in Tkaronto/Toronto. Through a combination of material and textual research, her practice unfolds across a variety of mediums including photography, collage, archival materials, textile, pattern, and printmaking. Bridging themes of postcolonialism, gender, and spirituality, Fatemi’s work challenges viewers to consider their role in relation to the representational accuracy and cultural consequences of Orientalized subjects. By employing methods of subversion and reclamation as tools to resist imperialist legacies, her work offers alternative perspectives surrounding the colonial gaze, ethnic representation, and collective numinous experiences.

Fatemi received a BFA in Image Arts: Photography Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally and has been featured in online and print media. She was the first-place recipient of the Clyde & Co. Art Award for excellence in visual art, was a finalist for the Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award in 2020, and is the 2022–2023 recipient of the Black, Indigenous, People(s) of Colour Residency at Open Studio. https://www.leilafatemi.com

Drawing from digital archives and physical postcards, Leila Fatemi explores the connection between photographic representation and props, which often symbolize societal status. In A Vessel to Bend Water, she critically engages with the historical representation of women from the SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) region in photography, particularly in Orientalist imagery, by focusing on the vessel—a recurring motif that reinforces colonial ideologies and constrains women’s roles.
