We are a vibrant cultural hub committed to bringing contemporary art and craft alive in meaningful ways. In recognizing our responsibility to honour the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this land long before us, we humbly acknowledge that we are on Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We express our heartfelt gratitude to these Nations for graciously allowing us to share their land. This acknowledgment guides our commitment to fostering a space of inclusivity, reflection, and respect.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Art Gallery of Burlington is located on the ancestral territory of many Indigenous Nations including the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Métis peoples. The territory is mutually covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy, the Ojibway, and other allied Nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We acknowledge that the land upon which we gather, to create and learn, is part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit.

Drawing from digital archives and physical postcards, Leila Fatemi explores the connection between photographic representation and props, which often symbolize societal status. In A Vessel to Bend Water, she critically engages with the historical representation of women from the SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) region in photography, particularly in Orientalist imagery, by focusing on the vessel—a recurring motif that reinforces colonial ideologies and constrains women’s roles.

Building an Artful Foundation

PRimary Program

Primary students will be immersed in the world of art and artmaking as they explore the gallery to learn a new vocabulary for understanding and appreciating art. Next, they’ll create their own unique works in our studios, deepening connections made between art and life and offering an opportunity to express themselves.

Art/Life Balance: Explore, Learn, Create!

Elementary Program

Elementary students will build on their understanding of art, from fundamental concepts of design to discussing the way artworks relate to lived experiences. Students will discover the gallery’s exhibited works and permanent collection through observing, answering questions and conversing with classmates. In our studios, students can create links with what they saw and express their own ideas, applying concepts of design to their works.
