Join the Art Gallery of Burlington this Fall for a season of fun, artful reflection. This season of free family-friendly programming is inspired by Wiigwasitig / waskway / Honouring the Birch Tree, which explores the heritage and healing power of the birch tree through diverse art forms. Reflecting the practices of Anishinaabe and nêhiyawak communities over several generations, the exhibition features wearable art, bark biting, film, and photography created by Pat Bruderer (Halfmoon Woman), Helen Pelletier, Amber Sandy, Seth Arcand and the late Angelique Merasty. Together, these artists preserve traditional knowledge and sustain intergenerational relationships with the Land and kin.
This season also looks at the work of Paper Pals Collective, whose exhibition Paper Bound showcases nature-inspired artworks highlighting our connection with all living things in the ecosystem, and The Image Remembers: Chughtai Moving Portraits,in which Los Angeles-based artist Mahnoor Euceph extends South Asian Old Master paintings into the present day, revealing that artistic inheritance is not fixed but continually shaped through reinterpretation. The practices of both Paper Pals Collective and Euceph invite families to take a pause and consider how things we consider ordinary, such as a petal, a salad mixer, or well-known history, can carry artistic potential and lead to creative reinvention.
Our knowledgeable artist-instructors will be present to offer guidance and support to develop new ideas, or you are welcome to explore independently and create in your own unique way.
