“Using the moon as a vessel for feelings of liminality, it taught me how to embrace the repetitive nature of change in life and framework in which my body moves and takes space. This is an Era of Phases, a time-space to see the repetition in the world around us, coiling in and out of it/our-selves, molting and hardening into new bodies.” – Akash Inbakumar

Era of the Moon: Phases connects the body to the cyclical nature of the moon and its tidal lock to the earth. Looking up to the celestial body we see its phases through the dark and light chasing one another. Through textile exploration Akash honours the internal dance between these two polarities and investigates the potency of the in-between.

These wearable forms ground a movement work of constant beginnings and ends, where the infinite of blackness and the finite of whiteness reach towards each other. Connecting to the rhythm and cycles of the moon the bodies of two dancers orbit each other, waxing and waning, mirroring the shape of the planet as it gradually changes between the four major phases.

Live performance of Era of the Moon: Phases is set on the full moon in Sagittarius outside of the AGB featuring Akash Inbakumar (dancer), Sofi Gudiño (choreographer/dancer) and Cindy Adhiambo Ochieng ( DJ/Composer).

Akash Inbakumar is a Tamil-Singalese Canadian artist based in Tkaronto. Their interdisciplinary practice uses installation, costumes, and performance to explore ideas of world-building, mythology, and kinship; entering partnerships with multiple mediums, tools, and processes, they conceive material-kin. These kin represent a world where craft objects play the role of carrying family lineage and storyteller, compared to the colonial west’s nuclear family. Queering the idea of how information can be passed down multi-generational/multi-specie networks. Inbakumar is a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design University and has shown work at ArtAdress (Oakville) The Robert Mclaughlin Gallery (Oshawa), Artscape Gibraltar Point (Toronto), Patel Brown Gallery (Toronto), Xpace Cultural Center (Toronto) and Riverdale Hub (Toronto).

Era of the Moon: Phases is generously sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts.
